How To Avoid Ticks

Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas, high grass, or leaf litter. That’s not to say, you won’t find one on your couch, as it could have been hitched a ride with your pet. They are most active during the spring, summer and fall, and in warmer areas may be active all year round. Recent information has established with our warmer winters, ticks are surviving even with snow on the ground.

It is best to:

  • Clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edge of lawns.
  • Place a 3-ft wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas and around patios and play equipment. This will restrict tick migration into recreational areas.
  • Mow the lawn frequently and keep leaves raked
  • Stack wood neatly and in a dry area (discourages rodents that ticks feed on).
  • Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees and place them in a sunny location, if possible.
  • Remove any old furniture, mattresses, or trash from the yard that may give ticks a place to hide.

Be prepared with a tick kit "just in case"!

Having the awareness about the dangers of certain ticks for their diseases they carry is one thing, but having something in the event of finding a tick on you, or being bitten already, well that is reason enough to carry a tick kit with you at all times. Whether it is in your car, camper, RV, hiking backpack, campsite etc; this is a great thing to have with you so you have all the tools required to safely check, inspect, diagnose, remove, capture, and dispose of any ticks you may find. Being prepared and not scared, will lead you to be more confident in your exploration of the outdoors without the fear of the tick getting you down.

What Is Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a potentially serious infectious disease that can result from the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. In 2020, there were 5.7 confirmed cases of Lyme disease per 100,000 people in Ontario and cases have been rising for several years. Approximately 70% of all cases are reported in June, July and August. This peak in cases during the summer months coincides with both greater participation in outdoor activities and increased presence of ticks in the nymph stage of their lifecycle, when they are about the size of a poppy seed and very difficult to see.

Early symptoms of Lyme disease can include a ring-like rash that expands outward from the bite. Other symptoms may be flu-like, including fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue. Find out more about Lyme disease and how to avoid exposure to infected ticks at the Ontario government's Lyme disease information page.
